History Behind the Building
This historic building dates back to the eighteenth century. The building was known by the name Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora da Soledade it was home to religious women.
All religious orders were extinct during the nineteenth century, so a new purpose was found for this building.
The city suffered a lot of hardships during the twentieth century, this led to the increase of orphanages and child care centers. In May 18 1919, the building is occupied and used as an orphanage named Orfanato Municipal Sidónio Pais- The Municipal Orphanage of Setúbal. The orphanage endowed young people with teachings that allowed them to follow a trade and to live their lives as full citizens.
In this building an educational establishment, a nursery school and a gallery of plastic arts would come into operation.
